Sega Master System 3D Glasses integration Empty
PostSubject: Sega Master System 3D Glasses integration   Sega Master System 3D Glasses integration EmptyThu Jul 04, 2013 1:27 pm

Hello,

I see a lot of mods posted here that are pretty cool and definitely "out of the box" of normal mods.  I was hoping to post a project I've been working on and see if any of you guys can get father then most other people.

I wanted to find a way to integrate the SMS 3D Glasses into either a Genesis system, or Genesis ROM cart.  This way, all you'll need is a CRT and generic 3D glasses and you'll be able to play all the great SMS 3D games right on a Genesis (some sucked, but others were really cool).

I first tried to integrate it into a Genesis 1 and use the headphone jack as the 3D glasses port.  I got it working once, fbut after I power cycled, it never worked again.  It think it may have been the lack of a capacitor, but I can't be sure.  I've tried a few times since and never got it working.  Each time I try, it takes 3 - 4 hours, so I'm almost ready to give up.  I posted on another forum, but no one there was able to get it working either (or maybe never tried):

http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=72745

Since the adapter ties directly into the SMS cartridge port, I though another good option would be to build the SMS 3D circuit directly onto a ROM cart.  This way, you could use the 3D glasses on a Genesis 2 or CDX and not just a Genesis 1.

What do you guys think?  Possible?

You'd have to build it into a power base converter. You'll need the power base converter to play master system games anyway. This makes me wonder why krikzz doesn't include a port in his mega everdrive for 3d glasses if it can truly be controlled through the cartridge slot.

Well, I should have clarified: The purpose of this is to play Master System 3D games on a Genesis ROM cart. Right now, if you don't own an SMS system, the only way to play games in 3D is with a Power Base Converter and an SMS ROM cart. If you already own a Genesis ROM cart, it's compatible with SMS games...but there's no way to get the 3D signal to the glasses.

Also, I believe all the 3D adapter is doing is syncing the shutter with the on-screen frames. Maybe just sending power to the glasses at the right moment will work (I'll have to try that...). I guess all you'd need is a way to adjust it to make sure the shutters start at the correct time.

Do you own an SMS and the 3D glasses kit?

wtf?

Win product if it works.

Looking at the 3d glasses pcb:

That's not very simple looking to me.  I read your thread, you have 3 unconnected pins haha.  I suppose I can open up my master system and look at where pins connect if that will help.

Looking at the circuit of the power base converter will give you your answers.

Holy shit...I have to try and find out where to buy that thing!!  Even if it won't work with the SMS, my cousin will love that for his Vectrex!

Yeah, that's why instead of re-creating it, I tried directly wiring it to the Genesis cartridge input.

Edit: The pinout I was using said those 3 pins either weren't used, or were just more ground wires.

Whatever circuitry you're missing will be on the power base converter pcb.  Crack it open and see how easy it is to recreate those connections and whatever they attach to.  Sometimes you don't have to recreate the whole thing just part of it.  I managed to recreate enough of the nes audio circuit just by using four resistors.

Looks simple enough.  The 315-xxxx chip is one of those funky custom sega chips.  Sega likes using custom chips in their hardware. This hardware is obviously re-creatable since the everdrives replace it with a fpga.

That's actually one of the things discussed on the SMS forum and it seems the only thing that really matters is the capacitor (there's a lot of other stuff, but it seems to be for the pause button, etc). The last time I went to try modding again, the Japanese website were the pinouts were posted are down...it seems like it's still gone.

I'd like to look more into that controller adapter. Maybe there's something similar that can be used with the Genesis or SMS?

That thing will plug into a genesis or master system it's the same port. Recreating the 3d adapter with todays technology is probably super easy. We just need to find technical information on how it works.

Haha that's your image.

Did you try the 4.7k ohm resistor in that schematic you posted?

Where that cap connects in the power base converter, if there's no marking for the strength of it try a bunch of non polarized caps see if one of them does the job.  0.1 uf is fairly standard. Just keep re-creating stuff in the power base converter until you get it. The power base converter traces will show you where to connect everything unless it connects to that custom chip.

btw, i can also confirm that the power base converter works with the xeye. I have one that i de-cased years ago so it will fit.

For some reason the power base converter works, but ED master system mode wont.

id like to look into it more to see if theres a cartridge slot pin that needs to be connected in the x eye to make it work.

Did you tell krikzz about it or post it on his support forum?
