will it damage anything if i use a y cable to combine stereo into mono for my pvm input? the pvm is mono only.

That won't work you need two resistors connecting the two lines into one.  Last time I did something like that I believe I used two 10k ohm resistors and it worked fine (for a jamma adapter since it's mono only). Without those resistors you either get no audio or very distorted audio.
