Here's something I tried for fun. I did the snes digital audio mod on my snes jr. Then I connected the digital audio into one of these cheap ebay spdif to analog audio adapters:
Here's the video comparing the default system audio to the audio coming out of the system I just modded. Both of these recordings are analog so there's no need to have a digital audio system to experience this setup:
I much prefer the audio from the digital signal converted with a cheap modern digital to analog converter.
And for the sake of hilarity here's a picture of my snes jr in its current state:
The breadboard in the back is a cxa2075 video encoder circuit wired with the outputs going to the multi av port at the back. The breadboard in the front is the digital audio mod chip. The rca cable is what's connecting the digital audio output to the external digital audio to analog audio converter. I'm going to TRY to get everything to fit under the hood including the digital to analog converter. I'm not sure if the console will have enough amps to power the digital to analog converter but I guess I'll find out.

The completed system:
This's one beast of a snes, but it looks and sounds better by far than any other snes out there.
The extra power jack is robbed from a broken nes, I installed a nes power jack because it's the same jack as the model 1 sega genesis and you can get power bricks for the model 1 genesis that output 1.2 amps. The default snes power brick is 850 ma but with all that extra gear under the hood I needed more power to have everything running properly.

I fixed a really annoying hissing noise I was getting in the audio!
Unfortunately to fix the hiss I needed to externalize the spdif to analog pcb, but atleast now this mod truly is 100% complete!

Would it be possible to do an optical audio mod on the SNES?

How good is the sound quality with optical audio? If it's really pure,I winery id the mod would be possible on a Genesis.. The audio quality onGenesis systems varies a whole lot, perhaps digital audio would solve all those problems.

I don't know, I don't have any gear that takes digital audio. Anyway the genesis has analog only audio components so it's impossible to get digital audio from a genesis. Same thing with the nes and a lot of older systems, there's no digital audio signals inside the consoles anywhere to tap. Tiido has already improved greatly on the genesis audio circuit, I recently found how to adjust the bass / treble / muffle of a model 1 genesis thanks to the help of ace, I'm just waiting on parts to tweak it. The genesis audio is completely tweakable on any model by adjusting the amping / mixing circuit so there's no need to get digital audio from a genesis. The snes mixing is done internally in a chip so the only way to improve the snes audio is what I did here.
